Chapter Eight

KITTY RAN. SHE REACHED her room, shut the door behind her and sat at the dressing table. Her cheeks were flushed from activity, tears glistened in her eyes. She touched the stray curl Colonel Fitzwilliam had caressed. The way he’d gazed at her, his deep brown eyes tender, his expression determined...She shivered.

It could not be—anything more than friendship. She was unsure of her new self, her ability to be a good wife. She wanted to prove herself first. Then love could arrive. She wasn’t prepared for such a visitor yet.

But Colonel Fitzwilliam filled her with an odd combination of such giddy, pleasant feelings, comfort, and a desire to please and be pleased, to walk together, and converse, or simply stand quietly together. It had taken all her sense and courage to leave him standing alone in the library. She had wished to fall into his arms, hear his low tones, feel his solidness. But such actions were wrong—they were not engaged, not attached. And would not be.

A knock sounded, too light to be Colonel Fitzwilliam.

“Yes,” Kitty said.

Georgiana entered the room. She had already changed her dress, a lovely muslin day gown. She shut the door and studied Kitty a moment.

“How is Anne?” Kitty took off her pelisse and gloves.

“Fine. Resting.” Georgiana stepped closer. “But you, Kitty, you look flushed.”

“I warmed myself by the fire downstairs. Perhaps I stood too close.” Too close to Colonel Fitzwilliam.

“Shall I leave you to rest?”

“Did you wish to talk?” Kitty sat on the padded bench in front of the bed.

Georgiana eased next to her. “I am concerned for Anne—and James. From what I gather, Aunt Catherine is determined they should marry, and believes she has the support of James’s parents. But they are not in love. Anne seems fond of James’s brother, Alfred.”

“You and Anne had quite a talk.”

Georgiana smiled serenely. “I am supposing many things, but I have grown to trust my judgment—at least about others.”

“I am familiar with the feeling.” Kitty grimaced. “Have you spoken to Colonel Fitzwilliam?”

“Only briefly, yesterday. And we have corresponded regularly over the years. I believe he may be ready to marry, but I hope he does not place family duty over his own happiness.”

“Darcy did not.”

“But our parents are gone. James’s are very much alive.” Georgiana’s absent gaze told Kitty her friend thought of her own parents.

Kitty grasped Georgiana’s hand. “You have been missing them of late.”

Georgiana nodded.

“Your niece or nephew will be a happy distraction.”

Georgiana’s smile returned. “We will have such fun.”

“If it were not raining, we could undertake some visits.” They both needed a distraction.

“We will in a few days. Miss Treadle arrives today too. We will need to be here.”

“True, and Lizzy may need us. Have you seen her today?”

“No, she was resting when I spoke to our brother. He said she would be well, but the mornings were often unpleasant for her.”

“And he, has he an opinion of all this?”

“He said it is kind to befriend Anne, but not to insert myself in the affairs of others.
